Relevant Narratives in Rising Cairn

The topic that interests me is the victim part of the narratives.  The victim usually blames someone else for their experience with reading and writing that is usually negative.

Reading Questions for Alexander and Brandt

Brandt says “they can lend their resources and credibility to the sponsored…”(Brandt 367). Lending their credibility to the sponsored can help that person succeed because people are more likely to trust them. Resources are helpful because when someone is still learning they usually do not have a lot of useful resources.

Reading and writing is highly valued because it helps people gain success in the long run. Most people have a complicated relationship with reading and writing because it is forced on us at such an early age. By the time we have the freedom to write about what interests us most people have lost interest in writing all together.

The “child prodigy” little narrative interested me because I had a friend who is like that. She’s smart but is always put on display for everyone to see. She was always reading and writing and at the library studying. The second little narrative that interested me is the “rebel” one because I can relate. I am the rebel. I don’t particularly dislike reading and writing but I try to do the least amount of work or do my assignments in a different way.

Brandt and Alexander Blog Post

This annotation is asking why we exploit literacy because Brandt is discussing how literacy is crucial and how we use it to teach and manage .
At the beginning of this reading it is talking about how literate skills had grown vulnerable so I asked what is the worth of literacy after the steam press.

Using the same picture from my first annotation, I also made literacy equal to competition because she said the correct types of literacy sponsors are crucial to political and economic well-being. I equate this to being able to compete for success in the world.

“And Yet” Exercise 2

b. I could include in class discussion perspectives.

c. I use quotes from each piece of writing .

d. yes I do.

e. Using phrase markers and clearly stating who I am talking about

f. Including multiple perspectives is useful for my writing to strengthen my argument.

Questions for connecting Gee and Cuddy II

Gee and Cuddy are talking about faking a role in society but Gee doesn’t believe someone can enter a Discourse if you’re not in it or being trained for it. These passages relate because Gee says mushfaking is a way to gain access to a Discourse and Cuddy says power poses can help people with no resources significantly change their lives. I agree with Cuddy on the idea of faking it until you make it. I believe this view from personal experience. It is possible to enter a Discourse with no formal training. I also have used power poses before giving speeches or presentations so I know they actually work.

Questions for Gee and Cuddy 1

Theorem 1 in Gee states that a person cannot engage in a Discourse unless they are fluent in it. He also says that failing to show all the aspects of the Discourse is equivalent to announcing you don’t have that Discourse. Theorem 2 states that a primary Discourse are limiting because a person needs more than one Discourse in their life. They are controversial because he is saying that it is not possible to fake a Discourse if you haven’t been in it but he also says that you have to have more than one Discourse because your primary Discourse is limiting. So he is saying that if you aren’t in a Discourse you can’t fake it but you also have to have more than one Discourse.

A mushfake is when someone does something when the real thing is not there. So it is to make due with what you have. People can have a mushfake Discourse by knowing some things about a Discourse and using strategies to pretend they are fluent in the Discourse. Meta-knowledge and resistance are together because they both go into a Discourse.

Cuddy says “…when you pretend to be powerful, you are more likely to actually feel powerful.” This relates to Gee because he says “the lack of fluency may very well mark you as a pretender to the social role instantiated in the Discourse.” These two quotes relate because they both agree that a person can pretend to be in a Discourse or feel powerful. Cuddy suggests power poses to help confidence which helps with Gee’s idea of a mushfake so they can feel confident in the Discourse you are faking.

Why are their points of view so different from each other?

Framing Statement

I feel that I am in the middle on the novice to mastery trajectory. I feel this way because I can see the change in my posts and writing. I have displayed more detail and ability to develop ideas. I also feel I am getting better at taking peer review and making effective changes. I also feel my peer reviewing has gotten better because before I would make grammar critiques and now I am critiquing the actual writing and substance of the paper. I feel I still have a lot to improve on but I think I am making progress. I do know that I can succeed if I put more time and effort into the assignments and think deeper into the meanings and elaborate in my work.

Seeing

I felt this assignment was helpful because I didn’t think about what I was trying to draw a person. I just thought of me trying to draw something. I wasn’t super concerned about if it looked like the picture. I just thought of it as trying my best. I think my picture looks pretty good considering I am not good at drawing. I feel this exercise made me notice that I think very analytically even on the smallest tasks.

“I Just Wanna be Average” by Rose

I sat down in the library with the intention of reading the entire paper in one sitting. As I was reading I was not able to complete it in one sitting so I read for half an hour and then moved locations to my room while my roommates were in class. I noticed that reading the library was not the best place for me because I would get easily distracted by people and would lose focus. Even with breaking up the reading it still felt like it took forever. I think part of this had to do with the topic not appealing to my interests. Reading in my room where no one is there to distract me worked the best for me.

Attending

King and Alexie’s articles are both about how they began writing and their thoughts on the topic as well. In King’s article, he discusses how “I took my fair share of English Lit classes in my to remaining years at Lisbon, and my fair share of composition, fiction, and poetry classes in college, but John Gould taught me more than any of them, and in no more than 10 minutes.” I underlined this because it made me realize that no matter how much writing you do you can always improve. I wrote always have an open mind because earlier in this article King did not want to write for the newspaper but it turns out he learned a lot in the first session with John Gould. I also wrote in the margins telling a story because King describes writing as telling a story. King restates John Gould saying ” when you write a story, you’re telling yourself the story. When you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things that are not the story.” I underlined this because it was a good way to describe the process of writing and editing.

In the article by Alexie I wrote that a paragraph equals a fence for words. I wrote this because he says “…a paragraph was a fence that held words. The words in a paragraph worked together for a common purpose.” I annotated this quote because I like the idea of thinking of using the words for a common purpose rather than just putting something on paper that seems like it goes with the paper. I also wrote to read as much as possible. I wrote this because in the last paragraph on the first page of Alexie’s article he says he read anything he could. This grabbed my attention because my mom would always tell me to read and now I see that it is truly helpful in writing and everyday life.
